Matthew is a multimedia artist based in Melbourne, Australia. Having worked independently on high end vehicles as a paint-protection film and vinyl wrap specialist for the past 8 years, Matt has a close understanding of the luxury and supercar industry.
In 2020 Matthew began exploring a new artistic modality utilising a base material of exclusive luxury vehicle body parts, Matthew salvages damaged and defective panels, repurposing the parts into his working canvas in a way rarely seen before using his native vinyl medium. Seldom used in the art domain, the automotive vinyl produces unique visual finishes in chrome, matte, satin and gloss, akin to that of only luxury vehicles.
Breaking away from his conventional use of computers and design, 9 of 10 pieces were created using only hand cutting and tearing techniques, with the driving inspiration to use his vinyl and knife like a paint brush. Through abstract thought and a myriad of multiplied feelings during the 2020-2021 period, this method shapes the visual aesthetic of these works.
Fragile Fortune also comprises of 7 original sculptural works featuring various luxury body parts. In these works, inspiration is drawn from the parts themselves informing the sculptural shape. Drawing from a minimalist approach, these sculptures embody the notion of collision and impact, caught in motion and solidified in form. Beautiful in their own right, these parts now embody an entirely new meaning and viewing context.
